After going up against tough competition from other fine talents in his age group, Ajax’s Matthijs De Ligt has been named as Uefa’s European Golden Boy.
The award is given to the top player under the age of 21, a title now held by the teenage Ajax captain. The Dutch international first emerged on the European scene during Ajax’s journey to the 2017 Europa League final and since then, has notched several Champions League appearances and excelled in a young Netherlands side that booked it’s place at the Uefa Nations League semi-finals this summer.
Still playing for his hometown club, he is very much the man of the moment at Ajax right now, but will be at the top of the shopping list for several clubs across the continent. Wherever he ends up in a few years time, De Ligt will be able to look back on 2018 as a crucial year for him.
